DOES EXISTENTIAL DEPRESSION = NORMAL
If one meets a person who is diagnosed with depression, I am not sure until I know him or her better whether to say “I get it!” or “I’m sorry”. In my opinion it depends on the reason for the person’s symptoms.
Is depression a physiological mental disorder that needs to be fixed by drugs or might it be a natural reaction to one's social surroundings and situation. Might some forms of depression imply that an intelligent human being with sensitive powers of observation is reacting in a logical way to the events around her or him?
If one listens to the daily news from around the world what do we find? Nuclear proliferation by entities who blatantly say they are going to launch ballistic missiles at we and our loved ones, people cutting heads off for religious reasons, species continuing to die off at unprecedented rates, humans being murdered on the streets for a few dollars etc. On a personal level, a son or daughter addicted to drugs, an abusive relationahip etc.
Should experiencing a state of depression and despair under circumstances like these be considered the act of a mentally ill person or an intelligent person who perceives dysfunctional handwriting on the wall of humanity? Might a depressed state of mind often be a rational and objectively warranted response to acute dysfunctional circumstances?
